Description
Black and white photograph of Louisa May Alcott Elementary School, front and side elevations. Named for the famed children's author, the school was designed by Rose Peterson architects. Alcott featured a simpler design than other school buildings by the firm and featured Classical details and was designed to provide maximum light and circulation for students and staff. The eight room, brick building opened in 1922 at 18th and bunker, replacing the old Oakland school. The first principal was Albert Evans. During the depression era, a thrift store operated at the school where PTA members mended and supplied clothing to city children. In 1971 the school closed and students were reassigned to M. E. Pearson School. It continued to serve grades 5-6 as the Prescott Annex until 1977 when it was converted to office use. In 1999 the building was sold to the Central Avenue Betterment Association. In 2002 the building was again sold and now operates as the Alcott Arts Association.
