Description
Black and white photograph of Bruce School, exterior. Bruce was located at 222 N 2nd St., on the SW corner of 2nd and Ohio in the French Bottoms of old KCK. Built sometime around 1890, the two-room frame building served African American students, grades K-5. The contract for a two-room Bruce School at Second and Armstrong was awarded to L. G. Ferguson at a cost of $1634. After the 1903 flood occurred, the Board determined that Bruce, the African American school in the Wood district, could be restored. The contractor was H. J. Davidson.
According to a May 1916 letter, the KCK Board of Education notified the Water Department that the water service had been leased to the Kansas City Bridge Company. By 1929, the school building had been moved to another location and the Board discussed abandoning school .
