Description
Black and white photograph of Prescott Elementary School, front and side elevations. Located at 13th St. and Ridge Ave., Prescott School was built in 1888. Originally the school consisted of four classrooms, two on the first floor and two on the second, but the district grew rapidly and eight more rooms were added. By 1910 an annex with four rooms was built. Additional ground on the east side of the buidling was purchased for a playground. Enrollment decreased after that and in 1937 the upstairs classrooms were converted to an auditorium. Over the years the school twice served as a flood shelter, during the floods of 1903 and 1951. In 1974 an agreement was made between the city, Bethany Hospital and the school district, to sell the property to the city for use as a park. The building was razed in 1977 and students transferred to M. E. Pearson and Whittier.
