Description
Black and white photograph of Horace Mann Elementary School, front and side elevations. In 1909, planning began for a twelve-room school house at 822 State Avenue. The school was designed by W. W. Rose and the construction contract was awarded to A.J. Hibbs. Construction on the ten-room school was completed in 1910 and it was namedfor the noted educator, Horace Mann. The building served eight grades and opened in January of 1911. Some of the early teachers included Anna Randles, Laura Fitch, Olive Perley, and Margaret Hyde. The principal was Lucy McCoy. The building had a relatively short life as an elementary school, closing after the 1938-39 school year.
