Description
Black and white photograph of Chelsea Elementary School, exterior view. Chelsea Elementary School, located at 25th and Wood, opened in 1923. The building was designed by Rose and Peterson Architects in the Jacobean Revival style. It was one of four identical "cottage style" schools designed for the school district by Rose & Peterson. The 11 room, red brick school house served K-8 students until 1925 when 7th and 8th grade transferred to Northwest Junior High School. in 1928 a new auditorium was completed and by 1935, Chelsea enrollment had grown to 492 and had the largest PTA in the city. The school closed in 1998 and the new Chelsea Elementary opened in March of 2000.
